Room Oplonti

Oplonti

Among the archaeological sites buried beneath the ash of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 ad.C. there is the zone of Oplonti, located about 10km from Herculaneum, and 5 km from Pompeii.
The archaeological excavations of Oplonti belong to a suburban area of pompeii, today located in the center of the city of Torre Annunziata.
In ancient times, it housed numerous holiday villas, farms, salt mines and the thermal complex. Oplonti is characterized by two monumental buildings: the Villa of Poppea, a luxurious residential complex and the Villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius, a country house where it was made, the processing of agricultural products, particularly wine and oil.

Small Curiosity

The name Oplonti various hypotheses have been made, some scholars believe that the name can derive from the Latin opulentia (“place opulent”), opla (“place of the fishermen”), or from the Greek apopolotes (“destroyed city). Other scholars have suggested instead that there has been an error of the cartographer in the transcript, and that the name of the Latin original was ob fontis (“source spa”), being present in the many thermal springs.
