The city of Ercolano, according to the legend, it was founded in 1243 a.C. by Hercules, the mythical Greek hero, most reliable sources suggest that the city was founded by the Etruscans and then conquered in 90.C. by the Romans. In ancient times it was a city very much loved by the patricians, who loved the climate and the position and so they decided to build their magnificent villas, at the same time were built the aqueduct and many temples.
Because of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 ad.C. Herculaneum was destroyed and with it also the promontory on which it stood. It was only rediscovered in 1709, when the prince Of Elboeuf, come to Herculaneum to escape to the Austrians, gave orders to dig a well, and so came to light many of the marbles and statues from the Theatre of ancient Herculaneum.
One of the buildings that characterize Herculaneum, the Villa of the Papyri, which is believed to be the abode of the father-in-law of Julius Caesar, Lucius Calpurnius Piso Cesonnino.
The villa is named so because the inside of the building were found, rolls of papyrus called “the papyri of Herculaneum” who are now in the National Library of Naples.
