Cuma

The Archaeological Park of Cuma is located in the volcanic area of the Campi Flegrei, in the territory of the municipalities of Bacoli, naples and Pozzuoli. The city of Cumae is the oldest Greek colony, and the most far away from the motherland, founded in the middle of the EIGHTH century, takes its name from the Greek word Κύμη (“wave”), which refers to the shape of the peninsula on which it is located. It was discovered during excavations in 1927, in which were the main buildings of the acropolis. Today you can visit and walk in the archaeological park, which surrounds the Cave of the Sibyl, the Byzantine Tower and the Belvedere on the rock, the Lower Terrace named the Temple of Apollo and the Higher Terrace on the top of the Monte di Cumae, called the Temple of Jupiter.

Small Curiosity

The Antro della Sibilla Cumana is an artificial gallery, greco-roman, identified as the place in which the Sybil of Cumae divulged its oracles. The legend says that the Sibyl was a young woman, of whom the God Apollo was madly in love with, to the point, to fulfil any desire. The woman asked her immortality, not knowing, however, that is not included in the eternal youth. So, the Sibyl began to age and shrink to the point of disappearing, the only thing that remained of her was the voice.
